Marvelous Grade 9 Math

WELCOME BACK!
Year 2015/2016

Course Outline

April 15, 2015
Math 9

We finished our circles unit with chalk drawings outside!  Students reviewed the circle properties dealing with tangents, radius, chords, central and inscribed angles.

We have now moved on to similar triangles and have created paper cranes to demonstrate some definitions with the unit.

On Thursday, we will begin a webquest in partners so students can develop a better understanding of similar polygons.

Math 9

Circles, Tangents and Chords, OH MY!

Geometry, I find you either hate it or love it.  We will be learning a few properties of circles this week to coincide with the following objective in the Saskatchwan Grade 9 Math Curriculum:

Outcome: SS9.1
Demonstrate understanding of circle properties including:

  • perpendicular line segments from the centre of a circle to a chord bisect the chord
  • inscribed angles subtended by the same arc have the same measure
  • the measure of a central angle is twice the measure of an inscribed angle subtending the same arc
  • tangents to a circle are perpendicular to the radius ending at the point of tangency.

Math 9

We will continue with Linear Equations this week!  We will continue the hand outs until Wednesday, write a Test for Practice on Thursday and a test on Friday!

Students have been fine-tuning their skills on http://ca.ixl.com/math/grade-9 through quizzes and practice.

Students can also study through worksheets produced on  http://www.homeschoolmath.net/worksheets/linear_equations.php

I hope everyone had a FANTASTIC BREAK!

This week the plan is:

Math 9 - We will be going more in depth about linear equations and inequalities.

Math Review Skills:
http://ca.ixl.com/math/grade-9

So far we have done:  Numbers, Operations, Coordinate graphs, Polynomials, Monomials, Solve Equations, Systems of Linear Equations, Linear functions, Exponents, Relations and Functions,  some of Percents, Single Variable Inequalities and Properties,

More specifically we will be covering Outcomes P9.2 and P9.3 in the Saskatchewan curriculum for grade 9 math.

Outcome: P9.2
Model and solve situational questions using linear equations of the form:
  • ax = b
  • x/a = b, a ≠ 0
  • ax + b = c
  • x/a + b = c, a ≠ 0
  • ax = b + cx
  • a(x + b) = c
  • ax + b = cx + d
  • a(bx + c) = d(ex + f)
  • a/x = b, x ≠ 0
where a, b, c, d, e, and f are rational numbers.

Math 9
This week we will be reviewing linear functions because there was some difficulty last week.

On Monday, we will review Task #1 and then play some computer games to help re-emphasize our learning.  On Tuesday, I have a sub who will be reviewing Task #2-4 and a handout, which will be due next class.  On Wednesday, we will be having a practice test which students will have a chance to ask questions.  On Thursday, we will be having a, hopefully, final test on linear equations (this term).  On Friday, we will re-emphasize our math knowledge through reviewing our test and card games.

Math 9

We had a test last week and some students are doing really well with the material while some are struggling.  I will be holding tutoring sessions on Tuesday and Thursday at noon this week to ask any questions about the material.

I have created study guides with each chapter of material we have covered:
Chapter 2: Exponents (FRIDAY, January 16)
Chapter 3:  Rational Numbers (MONDAY, January 19)
Chapter 1:  Square Roots (TUESDAY, January 20)
Chapter 5:  Polynomials (WEDNESDAY, January 21)
Chapter 4/6:  Linear equations and inequalities (THURSDAY, January 22)

Study guides includes review of the main points in each chapter and an assignment with questions that will be on exam.  For example, exponents will be page 1, rational numbers will be page 2,.. etc

If students are having trouble with any concept youtube videos can be found online.  I am available from 8am-start of school on a daily basis and tutoring sessions on Tuesday and Thursday at NOON HOUR this week.  I will also be available Wednesday after school for an hour.

EXAM ON JANUARY 27, 2015

January 5, 2015

Math 9
This week we will be reviewing through video games and coordinate pictures then moving on to learning about inequalities!

Next Test will be on Thursday, January 15.

Our MidTerm is on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 9-11am.  We will be covering all material we have learned so far.
Chapter 1 - Surface area and Square roots
Chapter 2 - Exponents
Chapter 3 - Rational Numbers
Chapter 5 - Polynomials
Chapter 4&6 - Linear Algebra
We will be reviewing all chapters from Friday, January 16 - Thursday, January 22.

December 8, 2014

Math 9
We are close to completing our linear algebra unit and will continue to learn more in January before our midterm exam.  An assessment of the information we have learned so far will take place onDecember 11.  It will be done differently than other tests because students will work in partners to complete the assessment.  One test will be handed in for each set of partners.  Hopefully, this kind of assessment will help students that are not understanding the material to understand it better with help from their peers.

**Remember videos on the math concepts we are learning can be found on previous blog posts...

On Friday, we will begin creating Bill Nye Math Videos.  The students are excited to get started and it will help them to go more in depth into math concepts that we have been learning.

Math 9

We are moving on to Linear Algebra.  Last week, we learned about domain and range of a graph as well as slope-intercept form, which is y=mx+b.  We have learned that slope (m) is equal to rise (up if positive and down if negative) over run (to the right) and the point where the equation touches the y axis is b (otherwise known as the y-intercept).

This week we are learning how to find the slope and equation if only given two coordinates as well as how to plot a graph if the equation is in point-slope form.  We will also try to find the intersection of two equations as well as be able to find equations that are parallel and perpendicular to each other.  We will also learn about inequalities and addition/elimination techniques.

June 25, 2014

Welcome to Grade 9 Math!  I am looking forward to being your teacher this year and am excited to bring different learning opportunities to the classroom!  I plan on helping students excel in their mathematical skills through hands on learning strategies.  I hope to combat any math anxiety through assessment strategies that will help with mathematical learning struggles.  I plan on offering tutoring sessions to any students who need some extra help.  I have loved math for as long as I can remember and hope I can transfer some of that enthusiasm for numbers to each of you.

The four sections in the Saskatchewan Curriculum for grade 9 math include:
1)  Number - which include powers, rational numbers and square roots
2)  Patterns and Relations - linear relations, linear equations, single variable linear inequalities and                                                             polynomials
3)  Shape and Space - circle properties, surface area, line and rotation symmetry
4)  Statistics and Probability - data collection and analysis, role of probability, First Nation and Metis
                                          use of probability and statistics

I am sure you will have a great summer and I will see you in the fall!

Ms. Yedersberger
